Barb is an Advanced Practice Nurse in the Nephrology Program at London Health Sciences Centre, Victoria Hospital . Barb provides care for the complex medical needs of patients receiving chronic in centre hemodialysis and facilitates care across the continuum for this patient population.

Academic Affiliations

Barb holds an Adjunct Assistant Professor appointment with the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing at the University of Western Ontario (UWO).

Interests/Research Interests

Barb's interests are focused primarily on issues related to CKD, hemodialysis, as well as issues that pertain to hemodialysis nursing. Recent research studies have included examination of stressors and coping among individuals with CKD, vascular access cannulation, and workplace empowerment and burnout among nephrology nurses.

Barb was part of a larger group involved in the implementation of RNAO's diabetic foot management best practice guideline (BPG) in the in-centre hemodialysis units and most recently assisted in expanding the same program to nine regional satellite hemodialysis units in the LHSC catchment area.

Barb's work has been published in Hemodialysis International , Canadian Association of Nephrology Nurses Journal , Nephrology Nursing Journal , Canadian Journal of Nursing Administration , and Leadership in Health Services .

Current Activities/Future Plans

Current activities include completion of a qualitative research project to examine issues surrounding cannulation of the arteriovenous fistula from the perspective of the hemodialysis nurse.
