Cathy is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Critical Care Program at University Hospital , London Health Sciences Centre. She has been in her current role since 1995.

Academic Affiliations

Since 1996, Cathy has maintained a casual position as an Adjunct Professor with the School of Nursing at The University of Western Ontario (UWO). In this role, Cathy is responsible for teaching and preceptoring BScN and MScN students, as well as lecturing in other faculties.

Interests/Research Interests

Cathy's research and clinical interests include: sedation, analgesia and delirium management in the ICU; family and team processes with end of life care/withdrawal of life support; reintegration of ventilator-dependent adults into the community; patient safety and quality improvement in the ICU (e.g., VAP, sepsis); and evidence based practice/journal clubs. As well, she is part of a research team investigating the impact of staff nurse mentoring on first year nursing students.

Cathy has presented on a variety of topics both locally and nationally, including Dynamics – the National Critical Care Nursing Conference and the Toronto Critical Care Medical Symposium. Some of her work, in collaboration with others, has been published in ­ Critical Care Medicine , Canadian Journal of Respiratory Therapy , and the Journal of Palliative Care .

Current Activities/Future Plans

Cathy represents University Hospital ICU at Canadian ICU Collaborative for Patient Safety Group, as the local leader of the Sepsis Team and Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) Team. Along with a representative from the CCTC, she coordinates and leads a city-wide critical care nursing journal club.
