Joan has been a Clinical Preceptor to students enrolled in McMaster University 's and the University of Western Ontario 's (UWO) Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program.
Joan is also involved in educating UWO Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students at the Byron Family Medical Centre.
Interests/Research Interests
Clinically, Joan's interests include:
Chronic health care management (e.g., Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, COPD, Asthma, Hyperlipidemia)
Health promotion and illness prevention counseling (e.g. prediabetes, smoking cessation, weight loss, exercise and nutrition)
Joan has completed a qualitative research project “The impact of a Nurse Practitioner's role with Family Medicine Residents' Smoking Cessation Counselling Experiences” and is awaiting publication.
In the past, Joan was the Nurse Practitioner working on the Community Care Access Centre's (CCAC) Integrating Physician Services in the Home (IPSITH) Pilot Project and is now a mentor for the Nurse Practitioners with the CCAC's Advanced Home Care Team.
Joan has published articles in the Canadian Family Physician , Registered Nurse , Canadian Nurse , and Home Health Care Services Quarterly . Her most recent publications include: “Evolving the Delivery of Acute Care Services in the Home”, “Work in Progress: Integrating Physician's Services in the Home”, and “Public Perceptions of and Comfort Level with Nurse Practitioners in Family Practice”. Joan is currently undertaking a descriptive audit of her smoking cessation counselling practice, looking particularly at success outcomes.
